The text at the bottom says:
“There was talk of such a science of archery and stick fighting only a few years ago in the Punjab that hearing about it, the English-educated young (Sikh) men will consider it astonishing… In sincerity, I believe that the young men of today might just consider these skills and Shaster Vidiya generally an impossibility because they have not even seen those bows, never mind having strung them. Similarly, many sciences and skills have declined after attaining their heights. Before 1857, many quivers full of arrows, matchlocks, flintlock guns, swords, lances, spears, sang (long metal lance), katars (punch daggers), peshkabj(armour-piercing dagger), pistols, shields and other weapons, armour and many types of chain mail were found in every house. All the people in their homes both learnt and taught Shaster Vidiya and became complete soldiers.”
“Now no one even speaks of these skills and the sons of brave warriors are becoming engrossed in making money. Even to those of us who have employed Shaster Vidiya, it is becoming as if it were a dream. In another fifty years or so this Vidiya will have dried up and people will say it was but all lies.”

Beaumont Newhall was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1908 and studied art history at Harvard University. One of the most prominent historians of photography as well as an artist in his own right, Newhall made significant contributions to the field. The founding director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, he also served as the curator and director of the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, Rochester, New York during the formative years of that institution. The author of a great many books, exhibition catalogues, and articles on photography, Newhall also published several editions of the classic text The History of Photography. Newhall was honored by institutions such as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, The Royal Photographic Society, and the John S. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He died in 1993.
Persepolis animated film based on Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. The film was written and directed by Satrapi with Vincent Paronnaud. The story follows a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution. The story ends with Marjane as a 21-year-old expatriate. The title is a reference to the historic city of Persepolis.
The film won the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was released in France and Belgium on June 27. In her acceptance speech, Satrapi said “Although this film is universal, I wish to dedicate the prize to all Iranians.” The film was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The film is black and white in the style of the original graphic novels. The “present day” scenes are shown in color, while sections of the historic narrative resemble a shadow theater show. To help with the translation of the comic to animation, art director and executive producer Marc Jousset came up with the design. The animation is credited to the Perseprod studio and was created by two specialized studios: Je Suis Bien Content and Pumpkin 3D.

John Berger’s Ways of Seeing is stimulating BBC television series about which the Sunday Times critic commented: “This is an eye-opener in more ways than one: by concentrating on how we look at paintings . . . he will almost certainly change the way you look at pictures.”

Episode 1 Vision of Art
Questioning the meaning and authority of images, whether Renaissance paintings or magazine ads for lipstick. His approach inspired by German philosopher and writer Walter Benjamin‘s work. When Berger cuts the canvas copy of Botticelli‘s painting, he also references Walter Benjamin’s seminal essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.“

Episode 2 Female Nude
Tackling the theme of the female nude, using it to look at female subjectivity and the concept of the gaze.

Episode 3 Oil Painting
Showing the close parallels between art and commerce that are exemplified in oil paintings

Episode 4 Advertising
About the desire to be a certain kind of person who lives a certain kind of life.

Annie Leibovitz is aesthetically gifted photographer, her portraits have appeared in magazines for over 25 years where she began as a photographer for Rolling Stone and now has a long-standing affiliation with Vanity Fair and Vogue.
She has produced some of the most memorable and iconic images of the last 30 years, from her work with Rolling Stone magazine through to her Hollywood cover portraits at Vanity Fair. She has also recorded the horrors of war in Rwanda and Sarajevo and taken intimate shots her own friends and family, including Susan Sontag.
When asked what a photographer’s life is about, the subject of this film replies that it is ‘a life looking through a lens’.
This documentary, directed by her sister, is a fascinating portrait of a great talent, featuring vintage footage of Leibovitz in action during the 1960s and contributions from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hillary Clinton, Mick Jagger and George Clooney.
Edited version from the BBC Documentary on the Queen, Leibovitz’s struggle to capture the Monarchy.
Power of Art by Simon Schama is not a series about things that hang on walls, it is not about decor or prettiness. It is a series about the force, the need, the passion of art…the power of art.

The power of the greatest art is the power to shake us into revelation and rip us from our default mode of seeing. After an encounter with that force, we don’t look at a face, a colour, a sky, a body, in quite the same way again. We get fitted with new sight: in-sight. Visions of beauty or a rush of intense pleasure are part of that process, but so too may be shock, pain, desire, pity, even revulsion. That kind of art seems to have rewired our senses. We apprehend the world differently.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, (29 September 1571 – 18 July 1610) was an Italian artist active in Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily between 1593 and 1610, considered the first great representative of the Baroque school of painting. Caravaggio’s approach to painting was unconventional. He avoided the standard method of making copies of old sculptures and instead took the more direct approach of painting directly onto canvas without drawing first. He also used people from the street as his models. His dramatic painting was enhanced with intense and theatrical lighting.

Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (December 7, 1598 – November 28, 1680) was a pre-eminent Baroque sculptor and architect of 17th Century Rome. Pope Gregory XV made him a knight and Pope Urban VIII took him as his best friend. He was revered in his time until a jealous rage caused him to have the face of his mistress slashed after discovering her romance with his brother. His reputation fell further after his bell towers for the Cathedral of St Peter’s started cracking in 1641. He redeemed himself and kick started his career again with arguably his most famous work, The Ecstasy of St Theresa, in 1652.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (July 15, 1606 – October 4, 1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period that historians call the Dutch Golden Age.

Jacques-Louis David (30 August 1748 – 29 December 1825) was a highly influential French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward a classical austerity and severity, heightened feeling chiming with the moral climate of the final years of the ancien régime.

Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775[1] – 19 December 1851) was an English Romantic landscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker, whose style is said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. Although Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, he is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.

Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. Some of his paintings are now among the world’s best known, most popular and expensive works of art.

Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. As one of the most recognized figures in 20th-century art, he is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War, Guernica (1937).

Mark Rothko (September 25, 1903–February 25, 1970), was a Latvian-born American painter and printmaker. He is classified as an abstract expressionist, although he himself rejected this label, and even resisted the classification as an “abstract painter”.
